Baseball team sets school record for wins with victory over Fullerton
Apr 26, 2008
The Irvine Valley baseball team set a record and moved that much closer to the post season with a 5-1 Orange Empire Conference victory over Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at IVC.
The Lasers broke the school record for wins in a season, recording their 28th (28-13). And Irvine Valley remained in a tie for second place in the conference standings with Orange Coast. The win moved IVC's conference record to 12-6.
"I saw a certain confidence in this team when we beat Santa Ana (last Thursday) and it continued out there today," IVC Coach Kent Madole said. "These guys should all be proud of this (the 28th win), but we have more to accomplish."
The Lasers played all facets of the game right on Saturday. IVC got a solid start on the mound from freshman left-hander Jared Haller. The freshman left-hander went six complete innings, giving up one run on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and had eight strikeouts.
Sophomore Robert Purpura pitched two scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit and had three strikeouts. And freshman Daniel Cabuling pitched a scoreless ninth. He gave up one walk and had one strikeout.
"I thought Jared did a great job once again and then Robert and Daniel came in, did their jobs and closed things out for us," Madole said. "The story of today was the overall performance we got from our pitchers."
The Lasers were out-hit in the game, 9-8, but IVC's hits were all timely. They scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control. The big hit was a three-run home run by freshman designated hitter Corey Thibault.
IVC added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Alex Agortsas.
Thibault was 1 for 4 with three RBI, Agortsas went 2 for 4 with two RBI and sophomore center fielder Matt Ivanoff went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
IVC and Fullerton play again Thursday, this time at Fullerton at 2:30 p.m.
The Lasers will then close out the regular season with two big games against Orange Coast later in the week. Those contests will decide second place in conference and possibly being at home in the first round of the playoffs.
Irvine Valley hosts Orange Coast on Thursday and plays at OCC on Friday.
