Baseball team routs Golden West

The Irvine Valley baseball team improved its record to 2-0 in Orange Empire Conference play and the Lasers did it in a big way Thursday afternoon.

The Lasers put up their most runs in a game yet this season, beating Golden West, 20-6, on the road.

Irvine Valley (13-7 overall) scored a run in the first inning, five runs in the third, four in the fifth inning, six runs in the seventh inning and four more in the top of the ninth.

Eight different players drove in runs.

Freshman first baseman Connor Rhoads was 2 for 6 with three RBI, sophomore shortstop Abel Medina went 2 for 4 with a walk and three RBI and freshman designated hitter Matt Reyes was 1 for 4 with a sacrifice, a double and three RBI.

Freshman second baseman Sean Williams went 2 for 6 with a double and two RBI and freshman catcher Corey Thibault was 3 for 6 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore right fielder Brian Ferrante, sophomore centerfielder Matt Ivanoff and sophomore catcher Alex Agortsas also drove in a run each for the Lasers.

Freshman third baseman Vince Hungerford and freshman left fielder Cory Burkhart each added two hits for Irvine Valley in the big win.

On the mound, freshman Jared Haller improved his record to 4-1 on the year. He threw six complete innings, giving up four runs seven hits. Haller struck out six batters.

Sophomores Jeff Moore and Doug Tew and freshman Paul Sandoval each pitched an inning in relief to close the game out.

Tew struck out two batters in his inning of work.

Irvine Valley plays again on Saturday, hosting Saddleback in a conference game at 12 p.m. Sophomore Robert Purpura is expected to start on the mound for IVC.
