The Irvine Valley College women’s badminton team will go after its second straight state title Thursday at Pasadena City College.

Irvine Valley, which is undefeated on the season, won the Orange Empire Conference and then defeated El Camino, 21-0, last week at home in the Southern California regional playoff to get into the state title contest.

The Lasers (17-0) will meet DeAnza College, the representative from Northern California, in Thursday’s match.

“Team wise I think we have a good shot,” Irvine Valley Coach Martin McGrogan said. “We have a good, strong team with a lot of depth.”

Players from the Irvine Valley team will then compete in the state individual singles and doubles tournaments in Pasadena on Friday.

Freshman sisters Rulien Yeh and Rulan Yeh (University High) are at the top of the list of favorites to capture the singles and doubles crowns. Rulien Yeh is seeded first and Rulan Yeh is seeded third in the singles event. Each player has only lost one singles match this season. Erica Lin of DeAnza and Gina Gomez of Skyline are two of the other top seeds.

The Yeh sisters are the top seed in doubles. The duo is undefeated in doubles on the year.

“The individual events are going to be a toss up, but I have a lot of confidence in our players,” McGrogan said.

Rulien Yeh defeated her sister to win the Orange Empire Conference singles title last week at Grossmont College.

The sisters teamed to capture the conference doubles crown.

Other key members of the Irvine Valley team include freshmen Jenna Chiu and Brita Kjalstrom and sophomores Kitty-Yee Wong, Grace Leung and Midori Tanaka.
