The two teams that competed for the state team title dominated the first day of action of the California Community College Athletic Association individual tournaments on Friday at Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley College, which won the team event on Thursday, placed three players in the semifinals in singles and state runner-up City College of San Francisco had three teams get through to the semifinals in doubles.

Making up the singles final four are Irvine Valley’s Vimla Phongasavithas, Shannon Hsu and Anoma Phongasavithas along with San Francisco’s Yan Li.

Vimla Phongasavithas, who won the Orange Empire Conference singles title, is the top-seeded player in the draw.

Her sister, Anoma, knocked off the No. 2 seed and Coast Conference singles champion, San Francisco’s Jing Liang, in the quarterfinals in three games on Friday.

Irvine Valley’s Hsu had the easiest time in the quarterfinals, winning, 21-7, 21-5.

In doubles, San Francisco’s teams of Li and Liang, Wendy Zhu and Rufina Wu and Cindy Wong and Jody Chan are joined by Irvine Valley’s team of Hsu and Vimla Phongasavithas in the semis.

Hsu and Phongasavithas are the top-seeded team and Li and Liang are seeded second.

Hsu and Phongasavithas dropped just 11 points and then 17 points in winning their first two contests.

Li and Liang had to fight off Fullerton’s team of Janki Shah and Krishna Shah, 23-21, 26-24, in the quarterfinals to advance.

The semifinals in both singles and doubles will be played on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. at Irvine Valley.
