Women's badminton team blanks Grossmont

It didn't matter much that the Irvine Valley women's badminton team didn't have its top player on Wednesday afternoon at Grossmont.
The Lasers, who were without Olympian Eva Lee, still shut out Grossmont, 21-0, in a conference match.
Vimla Phongasavithas, Shannon Hsu, Anoma Phongasavithas, Ludie Duco, Stepani Le and Ayako Isshi each won two singles contests.
Vimla Phongasavithas, playing No. 1 singles, won, 21-8, 21-9, 21-6, 21-9, and Hsu won, 21-7, 21-5, 21-6, 21-3, at the No. 2 position.
Anoma Phongasavithas gave up a total of 14 points in her two victories and Duco gave up only 15 points in her two wins.
Le won, 21-7, 21-3, and 21-6, 21-4, at No. 4 singles and Isshi won, 21-8, 19-21, 21-5, and 21-9, 21-7, at No. 5 singles.
In doubles, the teams of Vimla Phongasavithas and Helen Tung and Hsu and Shelly Stephan won both matches they played and the team of Anoma Phongasavithas and Duco won its lone contest.
Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting Fullerton at 2 p.m.
