Shannon Hsu wins state badminton singles and doubles titles
May 12, 2007

Coming into the second day of competition, four student-athletes had an opportunity to win both the state badminton singles and doubles titles.

But it was Shannon Hsu of Irvine Valley College who accomplished the feat at the 2007 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Women’s Badminton Championships, held at San Diego City College’s Harry West Gymnasium.

Fatigue never seemed to be a factor for Hsu, the No. 1-seed from the Orange Empire Conference, as she played eight matches in two days to become singles and doubles champion.

During Saturday’s matches, Hsu first defeated San Diego Mesa’s Jordana Barrios, 21-12, 21-16 in the semifinal and then moved on to play Maggie Ho of Skyline.

Ho, the No. 1 player from the Coast Conference, advanced to the final by winning a hard-fought match against SDCC’s Aenoy Bounsavath, 15-21, 21-13, 21-13.

In the final’s first game, Hsu fell behind 8-6, but countered with eight straight points to take the lead for good and won, 21-11. In the second game, Hsu found herself down 16-10, but recovered once again and came back to win the game (21-19) and the match.

“I felt lucky to win the match, but it was the fact that I kept focused throughout,” said Hsu. “She (Maggie Ho) didn’t play as I expected she would, but maybe she was tired. I would love to play her again.”

About 20 minutes after winning the singles title, Hsu found herself on the court again, but this time with partner Tracey Nie as they took on San Diego City’s team of Bounsavath and Amy Tu for the doubles championship.

Hsu and Nie won the final match, 21-14, and, 21-18.

“I really have to thank (Nie) for keeping me up during the match,” said Hsu. “It was more mental than anything else.”

This was Irvine Valley’s third straight singles championship and sixth consecutive doubles title.
