The Irvine Valley College women’s badminton team had no problem in the Southern California Regional final at home on Wednesday, defeating El Camino, 20-1.
It was the Lasers’ 58th victory in a row dating back four seasons.
Irvine Valley, which has won the last three state titles, moves on to play in the State Championships next Thursday through Saturday at Fresno City College.
"The ladies work very hard and are really talented," Irvine Valley Coach Martin McGrogan said. "They deserve all of this."
The Lasers captured 11 of 12 singles matches and all five doubles contests against El Camino on Wednesday.
Irvine Valley No. 2 player Grace Peng dropped just one point in two singles wins and No. 3 and No. 4 players Yuki Nakagawa and Stephani Tran each lost just two points in their two singles victories.
Lili Zhou, Peng, Nakagawa, Tran and Natalie Bui each won two singles matches for the Lasers.
The doubles teams of Zhou and Zuzu Htay and Peng and Nakagawa each won two matches and the Lasers’ No. 3 team of Tran and Bui won the lone doubles contest it played.
Irvine Valley plays in the Orange Empire Conference Tournament on Friday and then heads to Fresno next week.
The team state championships are next Thursday with the individual singles and doubles competitions on Friday and Saturday.
