6/13/2011 Thuy Hoang named state athlete of the month for MayThuy Hoang
The accolades haven't stopped for sophomore badminton standout Thuy Hoang, whowas named the California Community College Sports Information Association and California Community College Athletic Association female athlete of the month for May on Monday. For the second straight season, Hoang captured both the singles and doubles titles at the CCCAA Badminton State Championships. She also paced Irvine Valley to the state team title this season with a win over City College of San Francisco in the title match. Hoang went undefeated on the season in singles for the Lasers and led the team to a perfect 10-0 record. Hoang made it through the entire State Championship singles tournament in San Francisco without so much as losing a game. She battled against her teammate and doubles partner, Vimla Phongasavithas, in the singles championship match, winning by a final score of 21-12, 21-15. Irvine Valley sophomore Thuy Hoang won her second consecutive singles state title by defeating teammate and fellow sophomore Vimla Phongasavithas at the CCCAA badminton state championship at City College of San Francisco's Wellness Center Gymnasium. The two also paired up to win the doubles state championship to cap a terrific weekend for the Lasers in the Bay Area. Irvine Valley carried its success from the team state championship win on Thursday into the individuals on Friday and Saturday. Hoang had another dominant season, winning her second consecutive state titles in both the singles and doubles. She didn't lose in singles the entire 2011 season. And Hoang made it through the entire singles tournament in San Francisco without losing a game. She battled against her teammate and doubles partner, Phongasavithas, in the singles championship match, winning by a final score of 21-12, 21-15. Phongasavithas returned to the CCCAA state championships after winning the singles and doubles state titles in 2009 with IVC.In the doubles competition, Hoang and Phongasavithas were unbeatable for Irvine Valley. The duodefeated Mission College's Tina Nguyen and Kellyrose Sudaria in the championship match, 21-18, 21-17. "We were confident that we would do well in singles and doubles," Coach Martin McGrogan said. "It really says something to have your two top players in the singles championship. And they both performed great."

The Irvine Valley women'sbadminton teamis back on top. A year after notmaking the CCCAA badminton state championship, the Lasers won the 2011 team title Thursday afternoon with a 14-7 win overdefending state champion City College of San Francisco at the City College of San Francisco's Wellness Center Gymnasium. It was Irvine Valley's sixth state badminton championship - the last coming in 2009 when IVC also beat City College of San Francisco. "This means a lot because the level of play of community college badminton has really gotten stronger," Coach Martin McGrogan said. "We had to battle to just make it out of the South. Pasadena City was tough and San Diego City and San Diego Mesa were both very good. The competition was tougher all the way around." The team title was closer than the score indicated with it all coming down to the final two doubles matches. CCSF needed to win both in order to claim the championship but IVC's doubles teams were up to the taskwith the teams of Thuy Hoang and Maddie Sapigao and Ann Nim and Vimla Phongasavithas each winning in straight games. IrvineValley'stop threesingles playerswere dominant on the day. Hoang, Phongasavithas and Nim went a combined 6-0 in their matches and the three were part of four doubles wins.Hoang, IVC's top player, continued her two-year dominance. The reigning state individual singles and doubles champion, Hoang won her two singles matches, 21-16, 21-10, and, 21-9, 21-10. Hoang stayed unbeaten in singles on the season. "This is atestament to all of our players,"McGrogan said. "We are lucky to have two outstanding players in Thuy and Vimla. The others also stepped up. Maddie came out from volleyball and did a great job. Ann was terrific and often got maximum points for us. And Nancy (Chen)and Gigi (Siu) worked hard and improved all year." The state title was Irvine Valley's third for a sport this school year, which is a college record. IVC women's golf and men's volleyball teams also claimed state championships. In both 1993 (women's cross country and men's volleyball) and 2003 (men's soccer and women's badminton), Irvine Valley won two state titles. The badminton state championships continue in San Francisco on Friday and Saturday with the individual singles and doubles tournaments.

5/12/2011 Thuy Hoang is top seed for state singles tournament

The Irvine Valley women's badminton team will be taking on the City College of San Francisco later today for the 2011 CCCAA State Championship in San Francisco. Following the team title, the battle for individual singles and doubles state championships will be waged on Friday and Saturday. Irvine Valley sophomore Thuy Hoang, who was the Orange Empire Conference singles champion, has been seeded first in the singles bracket. She will receive a bye in the first round. IVC sophomore Vimla Phongasivathas, who was runner-upfor the conference singles title,is also in the field and also received a bye in the first round. Hoang and Phongasivathas are also the No. 1 seed in the doubles tournament. The duo won the OEC title. The IVC team of Ann Nim and Nancy Chen is also in the doubles tourney. Irvine Valley sophomore Thuy Hoang defeated teammate Vimla Phongasavithas in the singles title match of the Orange Empire ConferenceBadminton Finals tournamentlast Friday at San Diego Mesa. With the win, Hoang, who hasn't dropped a singles match this season,earned conference player of the year honors. Hoang and Phongasavithas teamed up to capture the conference doubles title at the tournament. Hoang and Phongasavithas qualified for both singles and doubles for the state tournament May 12-14 in San Francisco. Irvine Valley's doubles team of Ann Nim and Nancy Chen also qualified for the state doubles tournament by taking sixth at the conference event. Irvine Valley will also represent Southern California in the state team final in San Francisco. The Lasers defeated Pasadena City to win the regional title last week.

After a year absence, the Irvine Valley women's badminton team is back in the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship. The Lasers will be representing the Southern California after rallying for a 11-10 victory over Pasadena City in the regional dual team final on Wednesday at Irvine Valley. Irvine Valley, which has won five state titles - the last in 2009 - will take on the Northern California representative in the state team final next Thursday at the City College of San Francisco. "We knew Pasadena City was a very good team and it was going to be tough for us to win," IVC Coach Martin McGrogan said. "But our girls really came through today." The Lasers, winners of the Orange Empire Conference, earned the right by claiming the final two doubles matches against South Coast Conference champion Pasadena City. Down, 10-7, in the overall team score, the doubles teams of Thuy Hoang and Maddie Sapigao and Vimla Phongasavithas and Ann Nim pulled out wins to give Irvine Valley the regional title. The deciding doubles match, between Phongasavithas and Nim and Pasadena City's Priscilla Lun and JK Nguyen-Le, went down to the final game. Nguyen-Le and Lun won the first game, 21-18, and Phongasavithas and Nim won the second game, 21-17. Phongasavithas and Nim carried the momentum from the second game into the third, racing out to a 12-6 lead and never looked back. Lun and Nguyen-Le pulled within two Phongasavithas and Nim
points at 16-14, 17-15, 18-16, 19-17 and 20-18, but each time the IVC duo had an answer. A winner by Phongasavithas gave Irvine Valley match point at 20-17. Pasadena City won the next point, but a serving error by the Lancers ended the game and the match. Nim was one of the players of the match for the Lasers. She won two singles contests from her No. 3 position, including beating Pasadena City No. 3 player Jewy Liang, 21-18, 21-17, to pull Irvine Valley to within 10-7 heading into the final doubles matches. Nim and Phongasavithas also won both of their doubles contests on the day. Phongasavithas, Irvine Valley's No. 2 singles player, split her singles contests. IVC's No. 1 player, Hoang, remained undefeated in singles on the season with two straight-game victories. She defeated Lun, 21-18, 21-17, in a key late match. Overall, IVC won five of six singles matches in the first through third positions and three of four matches in the first and second doubles spots. "When you have players like Thuy and Vimla you always have a chance," McGrogan said. "They are top end players with a lot of experience. And then Ann played fantastic for us today too." Pasadena City, which reached the state championship for the first time in school history last season, dominated the lower half of the lineup, getting two wins each from Amy Ly at No. 5 singles and Thoa Huyhn at No. 6 singles. Huyhn and Clara Chang also won at No. 3 doubles for the Lancers. Irvine Valley improved its record to 10-0 overall, while Pasadena City ended its team season with a record of 13-2.

The Irvine Valley women's badminton teamearned theOrange Empire Conference title last Friday with a 13-8 winat San Diego City. The Lasers went undefeated in conference play and improved their record to9-0 overall.Irvine Valley will now play in theSouthern California TeamChampionship. The Lasers are hosting the event and will take on South Coast Conference champion Pasadena City on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Pasadena City has a record of 13-1 overall. The one loss came last month on a trip to Northern California where DeAnza knocked off theLancers, 11-10.Pasadena City is thethree-time defendingSouth Coast Conference champion and won last year's Southern California title, which was its first ever. It lost in the state final to City College of San Francisco, 11-10. This year's PasadenaCity team is led byJessica Nguyen-Le and Jewy Liang. The Irvine Valley women's badminton team defeatedSan Diego Mesa, 17-4, on the road Wednesday afternoon to move a step closer tothe Orange Empire Conference title.IVC won eight of 12 singles contests andall five doubles matches.For Irvine Valley, Thuy Hoang swept her two singlesmatches,21-14, 21-9, and21-1, 21-5. No. 2 playerVimla Phongasavithas won,21-15, 21-11, and21-8, 21-5.And No. 3 player Ann Nim won her twomatches as well.She received a default in the firstcontest and then won, 21-6, 21-3.Nancy Chen and Maddie Sapigao each split singles contests. In doubles action, the team of Phongasavithas and Nim won both matches (21-4, 21-9 and default) and the team of Hoang and Sapigao won 21-16, 21-6, and received a default. IVC's No. 3 team of Chen and Gigi Siu came out on top, 21-19, 21-15. Irvine Valley, which improved itsconference record to 8-0,can win the conference title outright with a victory at San Diego City on Friday. 4/6/2011 Women's badminton team has no problem with FullertonNancy Chen

The Irvine Valley women's badminton team cruised to a 20-1 Orange Empire Conference victory over Fullerton on Wednesday at Irvine Valley. Irvine Valley won 11 of 12 singles matches and all five doubles contests. Irvine Valley singles players Thuy Hoang, Vimla Phongasavithas, Ann Nim and Nancy Chen each won their singles matches in straight sets. In doubles, IVC's team of Phongasavithas and Nim won, 21-1, 21-8, and 21-3, 21-1. The team of Hoang and Maddie Sapigao swept, 21-11, 21-7, and 21-8, 21-8, and the No. 3 team of Chen and Gigi Siu won, 21-8, 21-11. Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in conference. The Lasers play again Friday at Grossmont. IVC defeated Grossmont, 20-1, earlier this season.

4/2/2011 IVC players win singles and doubles titles at own tourney

Irvine Valley badminton players dominatedthe titles at Irvine Valley's own tournament onFriday.IVC's top two players met in the singles final and combined to win the doubles crown. Thuy Hoang won five straight matches - all in straight sets - to claim the singles title. She defeated teammate Vimla Phongasavithas, 21-12, 21-19, in the final. Phongasavithas had a record of 4-1 in the tourney. IVC's Ann Nim also won two singles matches before losing in the quarterfinals. In doubles competition, Hoang and Phongasavithas easily won the title. The duo dropped just 14 points in its first match, two points in its second contest and 18 points in the semifinals before beating a team from San Diego Mesa in the final, 21-10, 21-10. Nim also competed in doubles, teaming up with a player from San Diego City. They reached the semifinals. Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, hosting Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference match.

Thanks to top singles players Thuy Hoang and Vimla Phongasavithas the Irvine Valley women's badminton team defeated San Diego City, 13-8,in a key Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at IVC. Coming into the season, IVC and San Diego City were projected as the top two teams in conference and two of the best in Southern California. The victory on Wednesday gives the Lasers the lead in the race to get to the Southern California team championship match. Hoang won her two matches at No. 1 singles, 21-10, 21-7, and, 21-9, 21-8, while Phongasavithas did the same, winning, 21-11, 21-14, and 21-6, 21-8. IVC also picked up a win at No. 3 singles from Ann Nim. San Diego City won seven of 12 singles matches on the day. In doubles, though, IVC took four of five contests to win the match. The team of Phongasavithas and Nim won, 21-10, 21-9, and 21-10, 21-8, at No. 1 doubles and Hoang and Maddie Sapigao came out on top, 21-17, 18-21, 21-18, and 21-13, 21-15, in their two matches at No. 2 doubles. Irvine Valley improved its record to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in conference. The Lasers host San Diego Mesa in a conference match on Friday at 2 p.m.

The Irvine Valley women's badminton team won a pair of matches this week to open Orange Empire Conference play. The Lasers defeated Fullerton, 20-1,on the road on Wednesday and then beat Grossmont, 20-1, at home on Friday. In the win on Friday, Thuy Hoang won her two matches at No. 1 singles for the Lasers, 21-9, 21-11, and 21-5, 21-5. Vimla Phongasavithas won at No. 2 singles, 21-10, 21-13, and 21-4, 21-6. At No. 3 singles, Ann Nim won, 21-6, 21-3, and 21-2, 21-9, for the Lasers. At No. 4 singles, Nancy Chen came out on top, 21-12, 21-17, and 21-14, 21-8. And at No. 5 singles, Maddie Sapigao won, 21-11, 21-9, and 21-12, 21-10 for IVC. Gigi Siu, at No. 6 singles, split her two matches. In doubles, the teams of Hoang and Sapigao and Phongasavithas and Nim each swept their two contests. And the team of Chen and Siu won its No. 3 doubles match, 21-8, 18-21, 21-11. Irvine Valley plays again on Monday at home when it takes on Brynmar at 5 p.m.

3/1/2011 Women's badminton players win tourney titles

Irvine Valley sophomore women's badminton player Vimla Phongasavithas captured the singles title at the first Orange Empire Conference tournament at Grossmont last week. Phongasavithas also teamed with Ann Nim to take the doubles title.
