The Curriculum

The Astronomy program is part of the Physical Science department. The curriculum is designed to attract and cultivate the student's imagination as to the origin, composition, and mechanics of the solar system. Courses offered through the curriculum meet general education requirements in natural sciences. The also may be taken as electives toward a major in liberal arts and sciences, or they may be taken to meet the requirements for an Associate in Arts degree with a major in physical science.

Irvine Valley College Joins Irvine Spectrum Center®
In Astronomy Celebration, Saturday, April 17, 2010

Over 150 general astronomy students, under the direction of Professors Roy McCord and Jennifer Tan, from Irvine Valley College (IVC) will provide visitors at Irvine Spectrum Center® with a unique opportunity to participate in the Celebration of the Quadricentennial Year of Astronomy (QYA) on Saturday, April 17, with solar viewing available from noon to 3:00 p.m. and lunar viewing available from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The celebration will include presentations at both the Giant Wheel Court and Edwards Court.  Orange County resident, Paul Wicker, who portrays Galileo will also make appearances throughout the day.

IVC Honors Class Astronomy students will be managing activities, guiding visitors and answering questions. In addition, 20 IVC Observational Astronomy students will be operating the telescopes and instructing visitors in how to optimize their observational experience.
