Through an intervention with a found text, I create the modern equivalent of an illuminated manuscript. My books are revamped from cover to cover in a combination of painting, printmaking and bookbinding along with digital manipulations in order to reevaluate the validity of the historical narrative by creating a newer fictionalized history. Each word or line of text has been stricken or modified to create an original language in which a fresh narrative can be drawn. These new words, along with the manipulation of the cover and an alternate title that corresponds with the original, allows me to rewrite the fables and events of history to highlight the irrational or problematic areas that have been overlooked over time.
The end product becomes a museum type installation of categorized and encased books and ephemera that work together to create a falsified past. In some cases, the installation becomes more viewer interactive where it is possible to sit and “read” the books and dossiers of related artifacts as if they were stepping into the scriptorium or library of a compulsive scribe or historian. It is with this ability to “read” the work or study it under glass that the art becomes reanimated from the cast-off materials of which the work originated; books and tales alike. |
