Strong Opportunities, Real Success: Addressing Equity for Community College Students
Join a hybrid discussion, via Zoom or inside BSTIC 101, with Dr. Laura Rendón, a nationally-recognized student advocate, activist scholar and contemplative educator who established the groundbreaking validation theory. This theory is defined as “an enabling, confirming and supportive process initiated by in- and out-of-class agents that fosters academic and interpersonal development.”
Dr. Rendón is a passionate advocate for low-income, first-generation students whom she feels have hopes and dreams but often do not know how to realize them.
The Lecture, from 10:00am-11:00am, will be followed by a Student Meet and Greet from 11:00am-12:00pm

Career Chat: Pre-Law/Law ft. Nick Barba
Guest speakers will share their career path with students and give students advice on pursuing a career in similar paths.
Students will have an opportunity to ask questions about academic preparation, professional experience, etc.
Speaker Bio:
This month’s speaker is Nick Barba, an associate in the Orange County office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he currently practices in the firm's litigation department. His primary focus has been employment and patent cases. Mr. Barba earned his law degree in 2020 from the University of Virginia School of Law. While in law school, he served as an extern for the Honorable Andrew J. Guilford at the United States District Court in Santa Ana, and as a student researcher for the Future of Privacy Forum. Mr. Barba also served as an Articles Editor for the Journal of Law and Politics. Before attending law school, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from California State University, Fullerton while working full-time as an Electronics Manager at Walmart.
As a 2020 law school graduate, Mr. Barba has recent experience in the pre-law, law school, and the career search process. Feel free to take notes and come with any questions regarding pre-law, law school, law school applications, LSATs, The California Bar Exam, and careers in law.

Career Chat: Genetic Counseling ft. Ping Gong, MS, CGC

Speaker Bio:
Ping Gong, MS, CGC is a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor, currently based in San Francisco, California. She started her undergraduate education at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). After two years at SBCC, she transferred to University of California, San Diego where she earned a bachelor’s degree in General Biology. She continued her education at Stanford University and graduated with a master’s degree in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling. Since graduation, she has worked in the reproductive genetics space as both a clinical genetic counselor and a laboratory genetic counselor. She is a co-founder of Southern California Genetic Counselors, a nonprofit organization and network of genetic counselors in Southern California. Ping is passionate about promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the genetic counseling profession.
