General Information

IVC has a very active program where students currently attending grades K-12 may also register for classes at the college as Special Part-time Students. For students in this program, college-level courses taken while a student at IVC will easily transfer into state and private universities and may in some case transfer into their high schools. Through this program IVC is providing an opportunity for qualified K-12 students to study in advanced-level instructional areas not offered at their present school, as well as getting some degree work completed early.

Participation in the program for Special Part-time Students current in high school is a very straightforward process. IVC simply requires that a current application be on file and the Special Admission Request for K-12 Students form is completed prior to registration. K-8 students must have the course instructor and associated dean’s approval prior to enrollment in each specific course. Because of the need for this academic review the Special Admission Request for K-12 students should be submitted by all K-8 students no later than the Monday, one business week prior to the semester or individual session within a term. If it is not received as requested, class enrollment may be denied.

There is an opportunity for exceptional students to enter the college as Special Full-time Students. This is a unique opportunity for students to move out of the K-12 system prior to high school graduation. This program is highly selective and requires the input of the school district and principal of the school you are currently attending. The President of IVC has the final determination in this type of application. The application process is detailed below and should only be used when you are academically and emotionally mature enough to fit in with the greater college environment.

Policies and Requirements for Special Part-time Students

Students must attend the minimum day at their primary school. Students wishing to enroll in IVC classes must complete assessment testing prior to registration. Students are required to meet all course prerequisites.

Students participating in this program do so under the direction of their school principal. The regional academic program manager's approval is required for participation by home school students. Parents may not act as the academic program manager for home schooled students.

Most applicants who are accepted to IVC will be allowed to enroll in any course for which they are recommended; however, recent changes in state law will exclude participation by K-8 students in physical education courses. High school students may petition for enrollment in a limited amount of P.E. offerings. Enrollment for high school will be considered only once per term and all required documentation must be in the Office of Admissions and Records no later than the first Thursday in the semester for this opportunity to be considered. K-12 Students may enroll for either day or evening classes but are limited to 11 units per semester.

K-8 students must also have permission from the IVC Office of Instruction to enroll in the recommended class(es). Permission is granted through the processes within the Office of Admissions and Records once the K-12 permit is submitted.

All IVC students are responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of the college as published in the Irvine Valley College Catalog and schedule of classes. The current schedule and catalog may be found on line at: www.ivc.edu/schedule.

Courses offered are college level courses and instructors will teach all courses at that level.

Enrollment in this special admission program will establish a permanent college record. Courses taken for college credit may be used to meet high school graduation requirements; however, this determination is solely made by the primary school district.

For new students the Special Admission Request for K-12 Students should be submitted with an IVC application. For continuing students the Special Admission Request for K-12 students must be turned in each semester prior to registration.

Special Part-time Students who are placed on academic or progress probation will be excluded from participation in this program until after high school completion. The SOCCCD board has approved the waiver of resident enrollment fees for students in grades 9-12.

Security should be a primary concern for parents of K-12 students who attend the college, particularly after dark. Faculty can not be expected to wait with students until their ride arrives.
