The aim of the adaptive fitness program is to help individuals with mobility issues and other special needs to maximize their health and fitness.  Many of our participants are unable to workout at a local gym.  Several of our students join Adaptive Fitness classes after they have completed physical therapy at a hospital, physical therapy clinic, outpatient center or home rehabilitation setting.  With a well trained staff and advanced adaptive equipment/facilities, all of our participants are able to make progress toward their fitness goals.  The IVC Adaptive Fitness program has individual exercise programs for students with a variety of physical readiness and conditions.  A partial list of these conditions of students we have served in the past includes:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury, Ataxia, Post Stroke, and other neurological impairments
  • Cerebral Palsy, Autism and developmental delays
  • Spinal Cord Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Guillian Barre, Post Polio, and other neuromuscular conditions

  • Chronic neck/back pain, Osteo and Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scoliosis, congenital orthopedic problems, hip and knee joint replacements, and other temporary orthopedic conditions such as strains and fractures

  • Cardiovascular impairments, such as those with congestive heart failure or persons recovering from a heart attack or stent/pacemaker/bypass surgery
  • Emphysema, Asthma and other chronic pulmonary conditions
  • Blindness and the visually impaired
  • Obesity, Diabetes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic medical conditions such as Hodgkins Lyphoma and other types of cancer

We encourage all participants to complete all medical and rehabilitation prior to enrollment in class.  In chronic conditions and special circumstances, we will work with your health care provider to develop a routine that compliments your medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Daytime Adaptive Fitness Classes are taught 3 days a week on Monday, Wednesday by Ted Weatherford, the 2005 Physical Education Instructor of the Year (SCOPE).

Evening instruction is provided 2 nights a week by practicing physical therapist, Mike Bennett.
