IVC Adaptive PE Program
Individual fitness goals of the students are the highest priority for the IVC Adapted Fitness Program. A Personal Exercise Plan is developed with each student focusing on fitness goals and taking into account each student's capabilities. PEPs include activities designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance and cardiovascular endurance in a well-rounded program. Each student participates in self-directed assessments as a baseline and then, periodically, throughout the course using objective measures of fitness to determine progress and to make any necessary adjustments to his or her workout regimen.

The Personal Exercise Plan
Upon entrance to the IVC Adaptive Fitness Program, our staff will coordinate with a participant's past medical treatments and/or therapy, current physical ability and personal goals to develop a Personal Exercise Plan. This customized plan, designed when you first enter the Adaptive Fitness Program, considers your fitness goals, your relevant medical background and your current physical ability. Baseline objective measures may include strength, balance and flexibility measures, body fat, girth and weight measurements, VO2 max, resting heart rate and blood pressure, and heart response to aerobic activity. This information will be used to set up a list of recommended exercises and activities to help you reach your fitness goals while accommodating any special physical needs. Plans are re-assessed throughout the course of each semester and modified accordingly.

Equal Fitness Opportunity
A number of our students require varying degrees of assistance with their exercise programs. Examples range from students who require comprehensive one on one assistance to safely perform their exercise routine, such as those with cognitive impairments, to students that just need help getting set up on a piece of equipment. After an exercise program is established, every effort is made to partner up students in the class with a fellow student or student assistant to complete their routine in a safe and efficient manner. Often times, these assistants are paid staff, volunteers, and students at IVC who earn credit in classes that allow them to explore careers in related health professions and working with the disabled.
Affordability
Publicly funded, South Orange County Community College District (IVC, ATEP & Saddleback College) keeps education costs to a minimum. For a low cost student fee of $20 per unit (in some cases waived by the financial aid office) and the $17 health fee, the participant has access to a state-of-the-art facility, highly specialized adaptive equipment, professional staff and assistants. For our APE1 courses, cost comes to under $1 per class for students not on financial aid. Course fee waivers are also available for those that qualify as economically disadvantaged. Please speak with the DSPS Office, or Financial Aid Office.
A Word of Caution
Students are encouraged to complete all formal physical therapy or other medical rehabilitation prior to enrollment in class. In some instances, students use our class as a bridge between formal therapy and returning to a prior exercise routine. In these cases, students are asked to have their physician or therapist provide information so that their personal exercise plan will work to augment their medical condition and/or rehabilitation. Physicians and therapists may be asked to provide information about precautions and limitations to exercise so that any routine developed will be safe.
