Her name is Cynthia Taylor and she is the branch manager of Robert Half, a company specializing in professional staffing services for accounting and finance professionals. She will speak to us about career topics like resumes, what employers are looking for, interview techniques, etc. She would love to answer your questions. Dec 1 Tuesday - From 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM we have scheduled an office tour of a local CPA firm, Wertz & Company, LLP. This is an established local firm that offers a variety of services. This tour gives us a chance to get a first hand look at an important career option and hear from people who work there about what they do and their experiences in public accounting. PAST EVENTS:
October 1 - Accounting Society members attended the Transfer Night from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the IVC Performing Arts Center. They learned from representatives of the various colleges about their business programs and what was necessary to transfer into those programs. Colleges participating were University of La Verne, UCLA, CSUF, Pepperdine, UCR, University of Phoenix, Concordia and Chapman. Sounds like a great opportunity!
May 6 - Free Ethnic Food Day
The Accounting Society is planning to participate in an event with other clubs to provide free food. We have chosen to feature Philippine cuisine.
April 30th - CPA firm tour
We went on a tour of the CPA firm White, Nelson & Co., LLP in Irvine. The tour was conducted on April 30th between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM. California State University Long Beach students were also there. Attendees found it interesting and informative. More such tours will be scheduled if possible. With finals coming up, though, it may be fall before another one is possible. Some of us will be busy over the summer planning such acitivities. April 23, 2009 - Bowling and Accounting!
CalCPA will be hosting Young and Emerging Professionals Night at Lucky Strike on Thursday April 23. All are welcome to come meet accounting professionals as well as young and new accountants! Cost will be $20 for bowling from 7:00pm-9:00pm which also includes shoe rental, 2 drink tickets, and great food. Registration starts at 6:30pm. Questions? Melinda Haffey from Deloitte, one of the Big 4 CPA firms, will be speaking to us about the profession of public accounting. This will be from Noon to 1pm in BST-119 (see campus map at http://www.ivc.edu/maps/pages/campus_map.aspx). She will discuss what kinds of professional services are provided, how that might be different from working for a corporation, what kinds of clients are served, and what are some of the different opportunities in public accounting. Melinda has worked in the tax services at Deloitte and now has gotten into student recruiting. This is a global organization serving clients all over the world and it will be an interesting look at one of the major career paths available.
February 10th the Accounting Society hosted a speaker from The Lucus Group. Senior Accountant and Finance Recruiter, Suzie Hoang gave tips about writing a good resume and how to land the interview you want. We thank all to those who attended.
Officer nomination and elections were finalized. Positions will be posted shortly.
The Accounting Society hosted seakers Michael and Susan from Macy's to discuss tips for employent success, as well as employment opportunities wthin Macy's. Michael, recruitment manager, and Susan, human resources manager, offered invaluable insider insight regarding the internal complexities of operating a large retail store, detaling the rles of support assistants, loss prevention agents, administrative assistants, sales associates, fitting room associates, and human resource assistants. Held November 25, 2008.
