YOU CAN BE A COLLEGE STUDENT

You are eligible to attend IVC if:

• you are 18 years of age or older or a high school graduate

• you have passed the State Proficiency Test or obtained a General Education Development (GED) degree. Current high school students may also enroll through special admissions.

WHY SHOULD I GO TO COLLEGE

People with a two-year Associate in Arts (A.A.) or Associate in Science (A.S.) degree earn at least 25% more each year than those with only a high school diploma, according to recent U.S. Census data. With a degree, you have more options for a career and a better chance for promotion. College also enriches your over-all quality of life, and going to a community college is an inexpensive and effective way to prepare for transfer to a four-year university.

CLASSES THAT FIT YOUR SCHEDULE

IVC offers classes during the day and evening, for eight weeks or full semesters, at community and industry sites, and online for your convenience.

ENROLLING IS EASY

Just obtain (and complete) an admissions application from your high school counselor, on the web at www.ivc.edu, or at the IVC Admissions Office in the Student Services Building. Most students take an assessment exam and attend an orientation session before registering for classes.

IVC TRANSFER SUCCESS

It’s easier for a community college student to transfer to a University of California or California State University campus than it is for a student applying directly out of high school. The grade point eligibility index is much lower, and community college students are given priority for admission. It is also much less expensive to fulfill general education and lower-division major requirements at the community college. Community college students are typically very successful after transfer. In 2003-2004, IVC sent 200 students to all campuses of the University of California and 360 students to 16 California State University campuses. IVC students also transferred to various private colleges. According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, IVC has one of the highest transfer rates to the UC system among Orange County’s four community college districts. IVC has transfer agreements and guaranteed admission programs with UC and CSU campuses. Over 50 four-year universities participate in the annual IVC Transfer Fair sponsored by the Transfer Center. The center also hosts numerous visits from college representatives throughout the year.

STUDENT LIFE IS ACTIVE

IVC has student government, over 20 student clubs, and co-curricular programs, including award-winning Model United Nations, Forensics, and Administration of Justice teams. Throughout the year there are art exhibits, concerts, dance and theatre performances, and special events. The 13 IVC men’s and women’s athletic teams include state and national champions.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

IVC offers two-year associate degrees in 60 majors in the liberal arts and sciences, business sciences, social sciences, and technologies. You can complete general education and pre-major requirements for transfer to four-year colleges. You can also train for a specific job, career, or technical program by earning a certificate. Or you can take courses for your own personal development.

HONORS PROGRAM

The IVC Honors Program currently offers approximately 20 honors classes to academically talented and highly motivated students. The campus also has active chapters of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honorary organization for two-year colleges, and Psi Beta, the national honorary organization in psychology for community college students.

IVC offers extensive support services to help you succeed. These include counseling on choosing a major and selecting classes; career counseling; transfer assistance; help with basic English and math skills; free tutoring; child care; assistance with veterans and international student issues; health care; and services for low-income students and students with a disability.

SAVE MONEY

The cost of attending Irvine Valley College is very low compared to the UC and CSU systems. The approximate costs (below) for a 12-unit course load for the 2004–2005 academic year demonstrate the difference. FINANCIAL AID, SCHOLARSHIPS AND JOBS

Financial need should never be a reason not to attend IVC. IVC disburses over $5 million in financial aid monies to a quarter of its students each year. This includes fee waivers and grants that you don’t need to pay back, work-study jobs on campus, and low-interest loans that don’t accumulate interest. Repayments on these loans are not required until after you have left the college. Whether your need is great or small, financial aid is available. A “full need” student can receive about $13,000 per year. Even part-time students can receive aid. Financial aid applications are available from high school counselors and the IVC Financial Aid Office. Scholarships: IVC offers over $250,000 annually in scholarships based primarily on academic merit and sometimes on need.
