Congratulations to Irvine Valley College debate team captain Aditya Sharma on his acceptance and recruitment by Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale for debate. SIU has offered Sharma a full-ride scholarship, including tuition and stipend.
“As team captain, Aditya was a standout on our squad the past two years, winning four awards at last year’s state championships and a gold medal in debate,” said IVC Debate Coach Gary Rybold. “We are expecting big things again from him this year, and SIU is one of the nation’s premier universities for debate. We’re proud to have had Aditya recruited to a school with this excellent reputation, and to receive a scholarship as well.”
SIU teams were ranked #1 or #2 in the country during the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons, and made the semifinals of each of those years’ NPTE National Championships. SIU has sent a team to the Final Four of the NPTE National Championship for six years running, a feat never before accomplished. All team members are required to maintain strong academic credentials while participating in debate; undergraduate research; community service; and other extracurricular activities. Debate team alumni have been accepted to and have excelled at top law and graduate schools across the country.
Aditya is a 2011 graduate of Northwood High School, and is a resident of Irvine. He is interested in majoring in economics or political science. He credits the IVC coaching staff for making it possible to be recruited by a nationally ranked university with such a strong debate team.
