Irvine Valley College has announced Dr. Lianna Zhao as dean of Mathematics, Sciences and Engineering. Dr. Zhao has over 20 years of full-time post-secondary teaching experience, 14 in the California Community College system. Six years ago, she moved into the ranks of community college administration.
Dr. Zhao began teaching at Capital Institute of Medicine in Beijing, China, where she served as a full-time assistant professor from January 1983 to September 1985. In the U.S., she first worked as a part-time teaching and research assistant with assignments in biology and zoology at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, Louisiana, from August 1985 to December 1988. She continued her teaching career as a full-time faculty member for Quantum University School of Chiropractic in Pico Rivera, teaching human anatomy, physiology, and nutrition from August 1994 to June 1997; and as a full-time professor of biology, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology for Imperial Valley College from August 1997 to December 2003. Dr. Zhao moved into administration as chair for the Science, Mathematics and Engineering division at Imperial Valley College in January 2004 and continued in this assignment until June 2010; she advanced to dean of the division in September 2010. Dr. Zhao has also served as director for a Title V Cooperative Project at Imperial Valley College from October 2005 to the present.
Dr. Zhao earned her medical degree from Capital Institute of Medicine, Beijing, China, and her Master of Science from Northeast Louisiana University. She holds numerous honors and organizational memberships. IVC President Glenn Roquemore said, “Dr. Zhao is joining us at an exciting time, with the construction of IVC’s new Life Sciences building already underway. She brings a wealth of creative and innovative leadership, knowledge and experience, which will greatly benefit the college.”
