A county Department of Education and IVC prize patrol led by Orange County Superintendent of Schools Bill Habermehl and IVC President Glenn Roquemore surprised the IVC’s Kay Ryals in the Writing Center this morning to celebrate the news that Kay would be honored as one of Orange County’s five 2012 Orange County Teachers of the Year finalists. As one of the five finalists, Kay will receive a $15,000 cash prize from the Dr. James Hines Foundation, established by Laguna Beach philanthropists Bill and Sue Gross in honor of Hines, a Saddleback College English professor.
Since 1992, the foundation has awarded over $2.1 million to more than 950 teachers in Orange County. The Disneyland Resort, The Orange County Register, and Schools First Credit Union sponsored the award and provided Kay with gift bags. Kay received a golden apple trophy, as well. A dinner will be held on November 1 at the Disneyland Hotel, where each finalist will receive the cash prize. President Glenn Roquemore and Superintendent Bill Habermehl both commended Kay on her dedication to her students.
