Women's Volleyball Team Seeded First in Playoffs, Hosts Mt. SAC Tuesday

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team earned the No. 1 seed in the 2013 CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs and will host No. 16 Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at IVC.2013 IVC women's volleyball team

The Lasers, who are the No. 2-ranked team in the state, wrapped up the regular season last week with a dramatic 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-4, win over Golden West at home.

The victory gave IVC a perfect regular season.

The Lasers have a record of 20-0 and were 14-0 in the Orange Empire Conference.

IVC had already clinched the program’s fourth conference title.

In the win over Golden West, freshman middle blocker Annie Mitchem finished with 19 kills, hit .600 and added three blocks.

Mitchem, who was named the Orange Empire Conference MVP, recently added a So. Cal. all-state honor.

Sophomore opposite Alexis Radecki contributed 14 kills and hit .480, freshman outside hitter Marisa Doran added 14 kills and nine digs, sophomore libero Becky Moodie had 25 digs, freshman outside hitter Kobi Pekich had nine kills and 16 digs, sophomore middle blocker Haley Whyte had three kills and four blocks and freshman setter Hailey Jones ended with 53 assists, 13 digs and three aces.

Jones was just named to the So. Cal. all-region team.

Irvine Valley has already played Mt. SAC once this season.

On the season, Mitchem averages 3.39 kills and 1.64 blocks per set. She is also hitting .454 on the season. Jones is raging 10.37 assists, Moodie is averaging 4.54 digs and Doran is averaging 2.83 kills per set.

The Lasers scored a 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 victory on Sept. 25 in Walnut.

Mt. SAC finished third in the South Coast Conference behind El Camino and Pasadena City.

Mt. SAC has a record of 17-6 overall. It was 11-3 in conference.

The team’s losses this season were to Grossmont (four sets), Irvine Valley (three sets), Cypress (five sets), El Camino (three sets), El Camino (three sets) and Pasadena City (three sets).

Marissa Hageman leads Mt. SAC, averaging 3.21 kills per set. She is also hitting .359.

Leilani Hobayan averages 3.46 digs per set, Caitlyn Fortugno averages 0.93 blocks per set and Yvette Becerra averages 8.64 assists per set.

The winner of Tuesday's match will take on the winner of the No. 8 Fullerton vs. No. 9 LA Pierce match in the second round.

The second round of the regionals are slated for Saturday. Irvine Valley would host that match with a win over Mt. SAC.
