Irvine Valley men's basketball coach Jerry Hernandez announced that sophomore shooting guard Ramon Mejia has signed with Division II University of Arkansas at Monticello.2012Mejia.jpg

Mejia was a two-year starter at Irvine Valley and one of the best outside shooters in school history.

The 6-1 Mejia, who attended Corona del Mar High before coming to IVC, averaged 13.1 points per game and connected on 37 percent of his three-point attempts and 86 percent of his free throws last season. Mejia, who also averaged 2.7 rebounds per game and led the Lasers in steals, was named first team all-Orange Empire Conference.

“Our ability to make shots from the perimeter just got a lot better by signing Ramon,” said Monticello Coach Allen Sharpe. “He was the leading scorer on a team that won 22 games. Irvine Valley and head coach Jerry Hernandez are well respected on the west coast. We feel very fortunate to sign Ramon and expect big things from him here at UAM.”

Mejia is one of eight junior college transfers heading to the Boll Weevils this season.

The UAM squad finished with a record of 21-9 last season.

"Ramon is headed to a program where he is really going to fit in and do some great things," IVC Coach Jerry Hernandez said. "Ramon did everything we asked of him the last two years and was really a dynamite player and scorer.

"We had to rely on him to score several times in games this season and usually came through. I am happy that he is headed to a quality school and program."

Mejia leaves the Irvine Valley men's basketball team ranked second all-time in three-pointers made with 128.
