Irvine Valley's men's basketball team didn't gain a share of the Orange Empire Conference title.
But the Lasers sure did finish the regular season on a strong note.
Irvine Valley defeated Fullerton, 65-60, Friday night at Fullerton to secure second place in the conference standings.
IVC needed a Saddleback loss to move up into a tie for first place with the Gauchos. Saddleback took care of business Friday night, beating Riverside to win the conference crown.
Irvine Valley ended up winning its final six games of the regular season to end up with a record of 22-6 overall and 9-3 in conference.
With the win Friday, Irvine Valley avenged an earlier double overtime loss to Fullerton.
The Lasers played their best in the first half. The score was tied, 11-11, but Irvine Valley out-scored Fullerton, 23-11, over the final 11:57 of the opening half. IVC took a 34-21 lead into the break.
Irvine Valley made 6 of 16 three-pointers in the first half and held Fullerton to just 36 percent shooting (9 of 25) from the floor.
The Lasers carried that momentum into the start of the second half. IVC took its largest lead of the game at 52-33 with 11:38 left on a three-pointer by freshman forward Michael Bolden.
Fullerton cut the lead to under 10 points in the final five minutes of action, but never got closer than the final five-point margin.
IVC led in second chance points, 15-11, and points off of turnovers, 18-9.
Sophomore guard Ramon Mejia led the Lasers with 15 points. Freshman forward Christian Scott had his best game of the season and first double-double for IVC with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Kalob Hatcher also contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. He added seven rebounds.
Irvine Valley, which was ranked 19th in the state and 10th in Southern California in the last polls released earlier this week now waits for the playoff brackets to be announced on Monday afternoon. Coach Jerry Hernandez expects IVC to be seeded somewhere between seventh and 10th. The top eight-seeded teams get a home game in the opening round.
