Tina Vuong named ITA Region I Player of the Year

Tina VoungIrvine Valley sophomore tennis player Tina Vuong was recently named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Region I Player of the Year.

There are four regions throughout the country and Region I makes up California.

Vuong had quite a season for the Lasers. She was also named the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year for 2011.

Vuong had a singles record of 14-0 during the regular season for the Lasers, going 13-0 at the No. 1 position. She also went 12-1 in doubles during the regular season, including 11-1 with teammate Natalie Loria.

Vuong was named all-conference in doubles with Loria.

Vuong qualified for the Southern California Regional tournament in singles and made the CCCAA State Championships semifinals in doubles with Loria.

It was the farthest players from Irvine Valley had ever reached in the state event.

Vuong helped Irvine Valley to a 10-5 record overall and a 7-3 mark in conference this season, which tied with Riverside for second in the final standings. Vuong is the first player from IVC to be named an ITA player of the year.

As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community.

The ITA, which is comprised of nearly 1,700 men's and women's varsity coaches representing over 1,200 institutions, administers numerous regional and national championships and the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings for over 20,000 college varsity student-athletes at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels.

The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship.
