Irvine Valley sophomore Thuy Hoang won her second consecutive singles state title by defeating teammate and fellow sophomore Vimla Phongasavithas at the CCCAA badminton state championship at City College of San Francisco's Wellness Center Gymnasium.
The two also paired up to win the doubles state championship to cap a terrific weekend for the Lasers in the Bay Area.
Irvine Valley carried its success from the team state championship win on Thursday into the individuals on Friday and Saturday.
Hoang had another dominant season, winning her second consecutive state titles in both the singles and doubles. She didn't lose in singles the entire 2011 season.
And Hoang made it through the entire singles tournament in San Francisco without losing a game.
She battled against her teammate and doubles partner, Phongasavithas, in the singles championship match, winning by a final score of 21-12, 21-15.
Phongasavithas returned to the CCCAA state championships after winning the singles and doubles state titles in 2009 with IVC.
In the doubles competition, Hoang and Phongasavithas were unbeatable for Irvine Valley.
The duo defeated Mission College's Tina Nguyen and Kellyrose Sudaria in the championship match, 21-18, 21-17.
"We were confident that we would do well in singles and doubles," Coach Martin McGrogan said. "It really says something to have your two top players in the singles championship. And they both performed great."
