IVC doubles team makes it to semifinals at Ojai Valley Tournament

2011-loria.jpgSophomore women's tennis players Natalie Loria and Tina Vuong did something last week that no one else at Irvine Valley (men's or women's team) has ever accomplished.

The duo made it to the semifinals in the doubles draw in the community college division at the prestigious Ojai Valley Tournament.

Vuong, who was recently named the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, and Loria cruised through their first three matches.

Loria and Vuong received a bye in the first round and then defeated Rachel Becker and Jacqueline Higa of Hancock, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round.

The IVC pair then beat Sara Cardanza and Mia Hosaka of El Camino, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 32. Loria and Vuong beat Karleyne Ishima-Oien and Mardee Littrell of Palomar, 6-1, 6-4, to Tina Vuongmake the quarterfinals.

Loria and Vuong then defeated Jazmin Ortiz and Sharon Reibstein of Grossmont, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals.

In the semis, the rvine Valley team fell in three tough sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, to Sabrian Emery and Jourdan Jefferson of Mt. San Antonio at famed Libby Park in Ojai.

Emery and Jefferson lost in the final to a team from Reedley in Northern California.

Irvine Valley's other doubles team - freshman Megan Miller and sophomore Katie Billings - won a match before falling in the round of 32.

In singles action, Irvine Valley's Vuong made it to the round of 16 before losing. She got a bye in the first round and then defeated Samantha Sismundo of Glendale, 6-0, 6-3, and Doris Obih of Fullerton, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Denise Hromadkova of Bakersfield, 7-6, 6-0.

IVC's freshman Mackenzie Shutler won a match in singles before losing in the second round.
