The Irvine Valley men's basketball team recorded its best win of the season Saturday night in the semifinals of the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback.
The Lasers defeated Mt. SAC, which was ranked fifth in the state, 81-71. Sophomore forward Joe Eberhard led the way with 26 points, sophomore forward Travis Fulton added 19 points and eight rebounds, freshman guard Ramon Mejia had 14 points and five rebounds, freshman guard Jose Vasquez chipped in 10 points off the bench and freshman guard Kalob Hatcher had seven assists in the win for the 12th-ranked Lasers.
But the good feelings didn't last long as IVC was beat in the final the following day by host Saddleback, 74-58. Saddleback led by as many as 23 points in the second half.
IVC shot just 38.5 percent from the field in the game, while Saddleback shot 54.5 percent, including 61.1 percent in the second half.
The Gauchos also out-rebounded the Lasers, 34-19. Fulton, who was named to the all-tournament team finished with 15 points for IVC in the defeat.
Hatcher had 11 points and Eberhard, who was also named all-tournament, contributed nine points. Irvine Valley record moved to 12-3.
The Lasers next play a non-conference game on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. at Los Angeles Valley.
