The Irvine Valley men's soccer team lost to Santa Ana for the second time in the last three games as the Dons (15-3-4) handed the Lasers (15-5-2) a 1-0 defeat in a second round playoff match of the CCCAA Soccer Southern Regional Playoffs Tuesday afternoon at Santa Ana.
Orlando Alcaraz had the first scoring opportunity of the game when he dribbled around the Lasers' defense but was stopped by IVC goalkeeper Daniel Hernandez one-on-one to keep the game scoreless.
Gilberto Castaneda scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute for Santa Ana when he buried a header into the back of the net. Edgar Islas set the goal up with a cross from the left side to the top of the box.
Alcaraz was turned away for the second time by Hernandez in the 38th minute and Castaneda sent a header over the crossbar in the 45th minute keeping the score at 1-0 going into the half.
IVC, the seventh seed in the playoffs, just couldn't get things going offensively all game. It was just the third time in 22 matches this season that IVC failed to score a goal.
Hernandez finished with four saves for the Lasers.
IVC advanced to the second round with a 2-1 win over East Los Angeles College in overtime in the first round last Saturday.
Santa Ana, which is seeded second, moves on to face Canyons on Saturday in a regional final. Canyons upset No. 3 Cerritos earlier on Tuesday.
