Men's soccer team wins conference opener, down Cypress

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team surpassed its win total from all of last season with a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference opening victory at Cypress on Tuesday.

The Lasers, who won four games in 2009, improved their record to 5-1-1 this season. Sophomore Nick Black and freshman Mustafaa Islam scored goals for the Lasers and freshmen Arash Maghsoodi and Fredy Razo had assists in the win.
IVC took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Black in the 23rd minute.
Cypress tied the score in the 60th minute, but the Lasers earned the victory with a goal by Black on an assist from Maghsoodi in the 84th minute.
Sophomore Daniel Hernandez played the first half in goal for IVC and had five saves.
Freshman Dietrich Geister had six saves in the second half for the Lasers.
IVC hosts Riverside on Friday at 1 p.m. in a conference contest.
