The Irvine Valley men's basketball team's stay in the 2010 California Community College Athletic Association Championships at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks wasn't as long as it hoped.
The Lasers dropped their first-round game at the state event to the City College of San Francisco, 70-64, and ended up finishing tied for fifth.
Sophomore guard Durrell Norman finished with 10 points and freshman forawrd Travis Fulton contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Lasers.
"Today is disappointing," IVC Coach Jerry Hernandez said right after the game. "But we had such a great season. We were really under the radar at the beginning of the year. We lost some key players from last year so expectations weren't that high. We only had two players coming back. So to climb our way to the position we were in (at state) was gratifying. We had good chemistry, good camaraderie and good intelligence all year."
Irvine Valley finished the season with a record of 26-5, which was only one win away from the school record. And the Lasers were ranked as high as No. 2 in the state this past season.
Hernandez hopes to get another shot at the state event, possibly next year with a team that will feature a number of returning players.
"We should have high aspirations for our program," Hernandez said. "The bar will be a little higher."
