The Irvine Valley College Foundation today announced that it has received a $21,000 gift from Charter 100, a philanthropic women’s community organization. This generous gift will be used to establish a new scholarship endowment, which will receive a 50 percent match from The Bernard Osher Foundation.
In doing so, Charter 100’s gift will become a $31,500 endowment that will provide annual scholarships, in perpetuity, to assist low-income students.
“We are thrilled that Irvine Valley College is the first community college in California to take advantage of the $25 million in matching funds provided by the Osher Foundation,” said Irvine Valley College President Glenn Roquemore. “This new endowment creates a permanent legacy.”
Ardent supporters of the college for many years, Charter 100 members have donated over $200,000 in scholarships to low-income, single-parent students at Irvine Valley College.
“We recognize the importance of a college education in our society, and we feel a strong moral obligation to help students who might not otherwise complete their studies without financial assistance,” said Charter 100 President Dee Sampson.
Earlier this year, the Osher Foundation announced that $25 million would be made available through a 50 percent matching program as a way of encouraging people to donate to community college scholarships. This was done as part of a larger commitment of $50 million which represents the single largest gift to a community college system in the nation and one of the largest gifts ever made to higher education.
