2/1/2011 Lasers off to good start at Tee Off Classic
The Irvine Valley men's golf team officially began its season on Monday at the two-day Tee Off Classic, which featured five Orange Empire Conference squads and three teams from outside the conference.
Sophomore Dave Durbeniuk and freshman Kyle Melchiorre paced the Lasers with scores of 1 under par at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
Sophomore Steve Grove fired a 3 over par for the Lasers. Orange Coast held the first day lead with IVC and Saddleback tied for second. Cypress and Santiago Canyon were both close behind.
The tournament continues on Wednesday and coach Ben Burnett said he will substitute his players with the three highest scores with three alternates "to give all a chance to show a score under competitive conditions."
1/24/2011 Men's golf team hosting four-squad scrimmage at Oak Creek
The Irvine Valley men's golf team is hosting a scrimmage tournament on Monday at Oak Creek at 11:30 a.m.
Cuyamaca, Palomar and Riverside will also be participating. IVC Coach Ben Burnett is excited about the potential of his team, which will feature 10 players.
"The battle for the top six spots in the lineup could result in us having a very good team," Burnett said. "However, I always tell the guys that we are part of the best community college men's golf conference in the United States."
Burnett said to keep your eye on Kyle Melchoire, who he said has a chance to challenge for Orange Empire Conference player of the year honors.
Another one of IVC's top players will be returner Steve Grove.
Irvine Valley officially gets its season underway next Monday, Jan. 31 at the conference Tee Off Classic at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
The two-day event will wrap up on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Los Serranos.
